Memory Gathering.

Over the last week I've been talking to people with Memories of the local area; I've seen photographs and newspaper cuttings and I've seen the wonder look on people's faces as they've shared some of the Precious Memories with me. The information is so interesting and deserves to be disseminated for others to share, but, occassionally I come across a memory that I'm honoured to be told but which will stay between me and the persosn who shared it.

No one said this would be easy, thank goodness, as there is so much information which would fill many a book but I shall tease out a few to share with you all as we walk down the path of waiting for a final compilation.

Norma M: remembers the chimney sweep coming twice a year to clean the chimney of their 3 storey house. They only lit the fire downstairs because of cost; occassionally if some one was ill they lit a fire in the bedroom, but, when the sweep came he had to clean it all putting up his dust sheets but inevitably making a mess that Mother had to clean up! They had to pay 7 shillings and 6 pence twice a year for this, at the time when a weeks wages was 7 shillings and 6 pence Imagine having to save that up twice a year on a tight budget.
